We had a non-golf day where we enjoyed a collection of Outlander-themed castles and modern engineering wonders.

Julie walking the Stirling walls Julie walking the Stirling walls

Our day started at Stirling Castle, with an early guided tour and general rambling. And what a location – a true castle premium spot on the hill.

The Falkirk Wheel The Falkirk Wheel

Next we visited the Falkirk Wheel, the sort of engineering work that I never knew existed. Rather than travel through 11 distinct locks, they shortened the travel time by putting in a rotating beam that swaps a lower boat (or set of boats) with higher boats.

Linlithgow Linlithgow

Next castle was Linlithgow Palace, a ruined castle and birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. The loch and surrounding park made this site very special.

Blackness castle Blackness castle

Blackness Castle feels like its name. Ruined, windy, cold, and imposing as it juts out into the firth like a shipwreck.

Midhope castle Midhope castle

Continuing our Outlander touring, and because we had some time buffer, we stopped by the Midhope castle aka Lallybroch. A bit of a tourist trap but on some pretty land.

Rail bridge across the Forth Rail bridge across the Forth

We ended our day of exploring near the Forth Bridges, visiting some viewpoints and enjoying a great dinner at Scotts restaurant.
