Let’s Go Rory
Julie and I had a prime spot to watch Rory win the 2025 Masters Tournament.
Celebrating Rory’s Win
We’ve been journeying across the southern tier of the USA for the past 9 days, mixing in dispersed camping, state parks, and Harvest Host stays.
Over the weekend we were in a hotel in Tulsa for a wedding, and on Sunday we had a long drive (for us) to Sardis MS to stay at a golf course. I have mixed feelings on golf Harvest Hosts. They aren’t always ready for visitors, and some of the settings are less than ideal for parking our van. This one was ideal: quiet at night (the course is situated in a state park on Army Corps of Engineers land), an adequate putting and chipping green I could stroll over to as the sun set to do some practice, and a newly built outdoor covered bar with a big screen TV.
I had not planned the stay to overlap with the final day of the Masters, but it worked out nicely. I took the early driving shift (about 5 hours with a couple breaks) so that I could switch over to watching the leaders tee off and play on my phone. The signal died as we entered the state park and golf course area; this was right as Rory was laying up on hole 13.
We camped out at the bar after setting up the Starlink so that Julie could work. The crowd was a bit hostile towards Rory (there are a lot of young bros that have become infatuated with Mr. DeChambeau) but by the end (and the playoff hole) the small crowd was united in support for Rory.
The 2025 Masters was probably the greatest golf tournament I’ll ever watch. Rory McIlroy winning the Masters, breaking his 14 year major drought, and completing the career grand slam with a harrowing Sunday round full of the highest highs and the lowest lows? It doesn’t get any better than that.
This is up there with the Cubs winning the World Series in 2016. I bought Jameson for the bar after the win.
